Sustainable palm oil use
We’re passionate about sourcing our seafood responsibly and we care about how we source land-based resources.
We make responsible choices around the use of palm oil as an ingredient. This includes removing or replacing it where possible. When we do use it, we only use independently certified sustainable palm oil, this includes: palm oil in kernel oil, kernel expeller and palm oil derivatives and fractions.
So why use palm oil at all?
Palm oil has valuable cooking properties which it maintains even under high frying temperatures. It’s also the highest-yielding vegetable oil crop, which makes it very efficient, and it needs less than half the land required by other crops (such as sunflower, soybean or rapeseed) to produce the same amount of oil.
Doing our bit to support fully certified sustainable palm oil
For the past 5 years we’ve been members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified supply chain system. We are audited every year by an independent inspector to make sure that all certified palm oil we use in our products can be fully traced back to RSPO certified sustainable sources.
Whilst we are a small operator in this area, we actively work with suppliers who spend time supporting palm smallholders in increasing their knowledge on best agricultural management and conservation practices.
We submit our usage to the WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard, which grades companies as responsible users of palm oil. In 2017, they rated Young’s as 9 out of 9, leading the way on progress against essential actions.
